Student partnerships spotlighted at SYGN social value event

Organisations and individuals from across South Yorkshire came together at Barnsley College to explore how social value partnerships can support the region’s workforce of the future.

Hosted by South Yorkshire’s Giving Network (SYGN), part of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF), the event showcased how businesses are cultivating social value through meaningful community partnerships.

Speakers included representatives from Barnsley Council, who highlighted their extensive work with the college to support students through apprenticeships, work placements and real-world projects.

Barnsley College works with hundreds of employers, including South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, to support its 9,000 students. SYCF is currently hosting three T-Level business students and collaborating with the college’s media students on a campaign celebrating its 40th anniversary year.

John Paul Laurence, Vice Principal for Partnerships and Growth at Barnsley College, said: “We are absolutely committed to transforming lives – that is our motto – but we can’t do it on our own. Partnering up in a way which gives students positive futures is what we are passionate about.

“It’s about creating opportunities our students could never have imagined. Many students don’t know what they want to do in the future, but through employer-led partnerships we can help guide them and give them the opportunity to fly. We want to work with businesses to give students the future they deserve.”

Catering for the event was delivered by students working in the college’s Open Kitchen, further demonstrating the value of hands-on learning.

Ben Carlton, a T-Level Business student currently on placement with SYCF, supported delivery of the SYGN event. He said: “Working with South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation has been a fantastic experience so far. I’ve learned so much, and gaining real-life work experience is incredibly valuable. I’ve been involved in various projects already, and it’s given me a great foundation for future employment.”

Michelle Dickinson, Head of Philanthropy and Programmes at South Yorkshire Community Foundation, said: “SYGN is a networking group with a difference. It was created to help South Yorkshire thrive, while also supporting businesses to deliver their social value goals.

“We are growing rapidly, bringing like-minded organisations together to make a meaningful difference. This is genuine networking with purpose.”

During the event, the Gripple Foundation was presented with a certificate to celebrate joining South Yorkshire’s Giving Network.

Attendees also toured the college to see examples of student partnerships and social value in action, including the Reloved Boutique supported by fashion retailer, Next.

The next SYGN event will take place at Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster, on Thursday 9 July focusing on inclusive workforces and employee wellbeing.
